Following is the Artist Statement for a show of my work at the Pt. Richmond Post Office invited by the Arts of Point Richmond, Spring 2023.

Elderberry (Doug Smith) began his photography training underwater! Beginning in the 1990’s, he traveled to warm water diving locations, participating in underwater photography training workshops conducted by a recognized National Geographic photographer.  Selected images from this phase of his work are included in Curiosity, on display at The Point Richmond Post Office, Spring 2023.

In January 2023, he participated in the Arts of Point Richmond Art Tag experience, where participants were challenged to create Accidental Art.  When frozen food packed in dry ice arrived at his doorstep, he seized the opportunity to use the dry ice to create accidental images.  Using a crystal ball lens and dry ice in water, he captured amazing images ─ some of these are presented in the show.

Dr. Smith watches for the “unusual” as he travels the world ─ from Borneo to New Zealand. See if you can determine the context and story of the curious images in the exhibition.

A retired Professor of Computer Science, Dr. Smith earned a second doctorate in 2022 at age 80. The Doctor of Specialized Ministry in Faith-Based Community Development was based on his ministry for LGBT citizens of Kampala, Uganda.
